Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15% is a common baseline for table service, 18% is considered good, and 20% or more is generous. Norms vary by country — many parts of Europe and Asia tip little or nothing because service is included — so adjust to local custom.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer and the calculator works from that.
How is the bill split across people?
The tip is added to the bill and the grand total is divided evenly by the number of people, so everyone pays the same share including their portion of the tip.
Example
An $80 bill at 18% adds $14.40 in tip for a $94.40 total. Split four ways, that's $23.60 per person.
